OCR: THE SEARCH FOR LIFE METEORITES THE SETI PROGRAM In 1992, NASA launched a SETI system capable of reading 10 million radio frequencies per second. But two years later, funding was cut. Astronomers immediately responded by creating an independent SETI institute so they could continue listening to the stars. Even European astronomers have their ears on interstellar radio waves-the radio telescope at Nancay, France, is the second largest in the world after that at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Of course, we cannot expect to receive signals from intelligent beings on Mars. Although the Red Planet has long inspired fantasies and speculations about extraterrestrials, today we know there is no intelligent life on Mars. Study of Mars and Martian meteorites, however, do lend credence to the theory that life may have appeared "naturally" on planets other than our own. So far, however, SETI researchers have not detected any signs of life in the heavens, but they are still listening and waiting ... MARS BETA1
